We wrote earlier in our travels about serendipity — stumbling into fun/beautiful/interesting places. Not surprisingly, we’ve happened on more of those in recent months. For example:
Who knew that Little Rock, Arkansas, was such a cycling city? On the Sunday of Labor Day weekend (when it was NOT 100 degrees and humid), we took a fabulous 26-mile ride along the Arkansas River. Since that day was Chase’s birthday, we celebrated in his honor with a yummy brunch, as well!
In Chattanooga, TN, we found a couple of attractions that had all the warning signs of tourist traps. We mentioned Ruby Falls in our “chasing waterfalls” post — they appear to have bought up all the billboards along the highway to Chattanooga (at least the ones not already purchased by law firms), and their graphics are very old-fashioned. We were pleasantly surprised to find a well-maintained building with lovely plantings, great views of Chattanooga, and, of course, that water all! The views from Ruby Falls could not compare, however, to those we enjoyed as we took the Incline Railway(the “world’s steepest incline railway”) up Lookout Mountain. From the viewing platforms at the top and from nearby Point Park, we could see for miles. We also learned some Civil War history along the way!
Between Oklahoma City and Colorado Springs, we made an overnight stop at the Corral Drive-In RV Park in Guym, OK. While Michele would really like to redo their website for them, the park itself is lovely, with lots of character, including a flower bed edged by rows of bowling balls; restored old cars and wire sculptures; and the original movie scenes! Sadly, they no longer show movies.
