Thoughts on travel, work, and life

Plan C: (C is for Cozy Camper)

As our time in Montreal wound down, we realized that we needed a Plan C, since apparently our truck was just never going to arrive (spoiler alert: that original truck still has not). Conveniently, Andrew still had his cozy 1974 travel trailer stored at Smirkus HQ in Greensboro, VT—on the way back to Boston, our next stop after Montreal. So, we picked up the camper, made a reservation in Wompatuck State Park in Hingham, MA, and started our camping life. With company. Apparently, while the camper was parked up in Greensboro every single earwig in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont had moved in. We spent two nights sleeping with the lights on and squishing earwigs, then went to Home Depot (did you know they have free wifi?) and purchased four different remedies for removing earwigs. Those, plus leaving the camper in the boiling sun in a concrete parking lot for a week, did the trick.

Once in Boston, we began the hunt for a truck that was in current inventory on a local lot. And…we found one! Acton Ford (a wonderful small independent dealership, by the way) had two trucks on their lot. We called and made an appointment to see them the following day—by the time we arrived, one was already sold. There is a very happy ending, however, because the unsold one was perfect for our needs. Interestingly enough, it’s not what Andrew originally wanted (it’s much larger). When we were RV shopping, someone gave us some advice to “buy your second RV first” — in other words; you are likely to learn what you want with your first camper, so try to identify that before you buy the first camper and save yourself some time and money. We definitely bought our second truck first.

(By the way, we received a lovely email from Ford last week that they still had no idea when the original truck would be built.)
