Back in 2022, when we loaded our worldly possessions into what now seems like a very small truck, we were not sure how long we’d be on this journey. Two years later (with a WAY bigger truck), we’re not sure when we’ll stop. Even if we do eventually settle on a space to call home, it will be a part time home (and a place to put the worldly possessions still stuffed in a storage unit in Waltham!). We have come to love this roaming lifestyle so much…and there’s still a lot to experience (and to learn). True confession: There was that moment in St. Augustine this past winter when we thought we were getting bored. Turns out we were just bored with St. Augustine (lovely, lovely place…not a lot to do there).
A few things we’ve learned over the past year:
We need a good blend of country and city life. Ideally, the country life includes great hiking and biking! And of course the city life has to offer interesting art and food.
It’s tough to be far from home as your parents age. We are deeply grateful to our siblings for all they are doing while we offer travel stories and tech support from afar.
Don’t judge a place until you have visited for yourself (looking at you, Texas!). We have been so pleasantly surprised to discover fun, welcoming cities, towns, and neighborhoods in places we assumed would be less than comfortable for us liberal Northerners.
In the coming year, we are excited to explore some new places and do some new stuff. During our time in Michigan and Colorado, Andrew will be working with Habitat for Humanity on local builds — they have a program designed specifically for RVers and he’s very much looking forward to it. We also can’t wait to get back to Colorado and Utah. We miss the mountains!
Fun fact: In November, we’re celebrating the 35th anniversary of our first date with a quick trip to Vegas to see the B-52’s (which was actually our second date…long story).
Even more fun fact: In February and March 2025, we will be parking the RV on the West Coast and traveling to Australia for the Adelaide Fringe Festival. Chase and friends will be performing with the Australian circus company Gravity & Other Myths …we will be homestaying them at an Airbnb, just like old times!
We’re not keeping this blog updated because Michele is working on a book. Of course, just like the last time she started a book, work has heated up and the book has taken a backseat. But it’s still percolating! In the meantime, we hope you’re following along on your choice of social media channel — Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn. And we hope to see you when we’re in your corner of the world!
